Rare & important antique bowfront stick barometer by Worthington & Allan (1822 - 1846) London. Flame mahogany case with classic Ramsden wrap around veneer. Ogee moulded pediment and ebonized urn shaped cistern cover. Finely engraved silvered brass register plates with rack and pinion operated vernier. Original offset style cistern tube. Backside handwritten script reads "Comynus Kings Road Chelsea." Comynus was an optician and dealer in scientific instruments and likely the retailer of the barometer. Original surface. Excellent working and overall condition reflects the quality of craftsmanship of these famous scientific instrument makers. Nathaniel Worthington & James Allan were apprenticed to the world renown Jesse Ramsden, instrument maker. After Ramsden's death in 1800 Worthington worked with & for Matthew Berge, Ramsden's successor until 1819. He then entered into partnership with James Allan in 1822.
