Rare and choice antique American historical scrimshaw tooth engraved with a Memorial to USN Captain James Lawrence (d. June 1st, 1813) in the battle between the Chesapeake and the British Shannon. Famous for the motto "Don't Give Up the Ship". It depicts a bust of Lawrence with a wreath of olive leaves on a pedestal that depicts the Chesapeake greatly damaged. Above the bust is an American Eagle with banner "JAMES LAWRENCE". An American flag to the left waves patriotically behind. To the right is a grieving figure of a lady with a young girl (Mrs. Lawrence and daughter?) The reverse depicts a classic figure of ATLAS holding the world on his shoulders. It is interesting to note that the engraved name of "AUGUSTUS" is to the right - this probably denotes the whale ship AUGUSTUS that sailed out of New Bedford on two voyages 1818-19 and 1819-20. This great engtaved tooth probably dates circa 1820 and the superb folk artist is presently not identified. Excellent condition with a very minor base chip and age lines. Beautiful rich natural patina. Size: 5 inches tall.
