Rare antique gouache painting of Mt Vesuvius 1838

A rare and choice antique gouache painting on paper (titled on bottom border) "CRATERE DE 20 FEBRARO 1838". An unusual up close view of the crater with domes and steam vents. A group of sightseers with guides stand on the rim. An old cardboard label on the reverse states its origins and provenance. The picture was painted to commemorate a visit on February 20, 1838 to the volcano by Mr. Chester Jennings, proprietor of the CITY-HOTEL, New York and as he travelled abroad for his health. The painting gives the ownership through 1910. Excellent bright condition with very minor stains on bottom edge. Appears to be original frame and glass. Found in a home in Chatham, Mass. Size: 19.5 x 15 inches overall.
