Scrimshaw in NYC January 2004

A week's tour last month in NYC produced little exciting scrimshaw. There were a dozen nice antique scrimshaw pieces at Christie's Americana auction and the best went to strong bidders. A large (13.5x7.75 inches) whalebone plaque with an active whaling hunt "Barque Terror" sold to the phone for about 38,000. It was rumored that the piece went back to an Australian (museum) - from where it may have first originated. The whaleship Terror sailed out of Hobart in the mid 19th Century. It was signed lower right -E. Hickleburgh and had an Australian family crest.
