A very rare and important antique scrimshaw sperm whale's tooth engraved with the "Lady Wellington Whaleing." A very active whaling scene with a sperm whale hunted by two whale boats. The reverse is titled "A View of the North Foreland from the Northd". A view of a paddle/sailing steam ship North Foreland approaching a port with fortification and windmills. English origin circa 1830's. Sold in the Barbara Johnson auction #1. This size is a remarkable 9.5 inches long, has a beautiful rich patina and is in great condition. The borders are spectacularly designed and executed. There are other known teeth by this great presently unknown artist. See Malley's book from Cold Spring Harbor Museum, page #18 for another example. Sorry, sold.
