Christies, NYC sale - January, 2003.
The scrimshaw market opened this year with a significant auction consignment from the late Dr. Field's collection to Christies, NYC. The best pieces brought very strong prices especially when you have to think the nearly 20% buyer's premium. Rumor says that there were significant number of not period pieces mixed in - the buyers seem to have a difficult time differentiating the questionable items. The best piece was not from the Field collection. It was a superior tooth by the same hand as the one on the dust jacket of the Flayderman book. It brought a very strong $47,500 including the premium.
