This lance, patented May 26, 1857, is 16 1\/8 in in OA length. Maximum outside diameter is 1 in. It has a screw on lance shaped cast iron point 2 1\/2 in. long x 7\/8 in. maximum width x 3\/16 in. thick. Behind the point is an iron cone 2 (+) in. long which tapers from 1\/2 (-) in, diameter where the point screws into it, to a 1 in. width at its rear. For 2 15\/16 in. behind that is a light gray colored lead (?) collar which is slipped over a 13\/16 in. diameter steel tube, which continues back toward the rear of the lance. The steel tube emerges from the rear of the collar and is visible for another 3 3\/4 in., at which point it screws into a rear section of the same diameter tubing, also 3 3\/4 in. long. That rear section contains a spring loaded firing mechanism which seems to be intact.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAt the rear of the lance there is a lead termination cap about 1 1\/4 in. in length and about the same 1 in. diameter as the forward collar. This cap has six raised longitudinal ridges each about 3\/16 in. wide which fit into corresponding grooves in the barrel of the rifled gun. About 5\/8 in. behind the start of this lead cap the ridges are interrupted by a circumferential groove about 1\/8 in. wide and 1\/16 in. deep. The ridges continue behind that groove for another 7\/16 in. to the extreme rear of the lance. The butt end of the lead cap is concave when viewed from the rear and there is a small blind hole drilled into its center.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eA 1 3\/4 in. long x 3\/8 in. wide spring loaded trigger projects forward at a 45 degree angle from its hinge at the steel tube, just ahead of the lead cap. This hinge permits the trigger to lay close against the tube for loading into the gun. After firing out of the muzzle, the spring moves the trigger back to the 45 degree angle and as it enters the body of the whale it is moved further backward toward 90 degrees and beyond, releasing a spring loaded hammer to strike a percussion cap and explode the lance. This type of lance has no timed fuse as is seen in most other bomb lances.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe forward lead collar is impressed with the maker’s name GRUDCHOS \u0026amp; EGGERS .
