Paul Madden (1938-2008)
Paul Howle Madden was born in Hartford CT in 1938, and lived in nearby Glastonbury CT. He studied fine art and history at the University of Connecticut. Upon graduation, he served in the Army as an intelligence specialist where his superiors discovered his artistic talent. He was promptly put to work illustrating maps and diagrams. Upon returning to home, he participated in many juried art shows and was hired as the artistic director of the window displays at the Hartford department store G. Fox & Company. In 1967 he and his wife Diane Chase Madden moved to Nantucket Island where he founded Paul Madden Antiques and continued his painting. Paul Madden had a one man shows at The Main Street Gallery and at the Whirligig Gallery. Working with acrylics, oils, or ink, Paul depicted abstract landscapes, still lifes, and artistic interpretations of antique Nantucket photographs.
