Fantastic antique scrimshaw Sperm whale tooth by the Brittania Engraver circa 1830. Depicts the English whaleship Daniel of London aflame and on the reverse; the same ship under sail in calm waters. Note: Daniel IV (proper name) was set son fire in the Pacific by mutineers on March 5,1828; the captain, officers, and crew were rescued by the London whaleships Elizabeth and Charles.

Scrimshaw is deeply incised with ink and red sealing wax. Encircling vine at base with a band of dots at tip. The Brittania Engraver (anonymous) is considered to be the earliest practitioner of scrimshaw and a major influence to Edward Burdett.
There is a well done repair to tip and the tooth is in great overall condition. Measures 6" long.
