Antique Scrimshaw Tooth with Whaling Scene
SKU:PMAMGH1Antique 19th C. Sperm whale tooth with whaling scene and icebound whale ship on reverse. Depicts a rare detail in scrimshaw, a whaler in the masthead (crow's nest) signaling to the whaleboats with a waif. Further decorated with geometric vine pattern along top edge of tooth. Traces of red polychrome on ensign, hull, and whale's blood. Measures 6-3/4".
Provenace: originally owned (possibly created) by John Healy, a ships carpenter aboard the New Bedford whaleship Rousseau 1875-1878; descended through Healy family.
