Antique Scrimshaw Panbone Basket

Antique scrimshaw panbone basket with swing handle circa 1875. A masterpiece of design and form, this is one of the finest antique scrimshaw basket we have ever seen. Constructed of delicate 1/16" panbone with a reticulated pattern of circles and dots throughout basket and handle. Made by the same hand as a larger Panbone Basket we sold recently and one in the New Bedford Whaling Museum (#1978.30.288). Provenance to the Howland whaling family of New Bedford, MA.

Condition: a small portion (<10%) of the whalebone was missing and has been professionally restored. Measures  8-1/2" by 5-1/4" oval by 3-1/4" high. Swing handle adds another 3-1/2" of height.
